Here we go again …

Journal entry by Abigail Johnston —

I’ve been having left hip pain for a few weeks. Well, in reality, more than normal hip pain. I always have hip and knee pain from my surgery last June but this has been much worse. I finally asked my medical oncologist for a referral to an orthopedic doctor. I saw her today. When she started talking about fractures and more tumors and a potential hip replacement, it got a little overwhelming. Bottom line, it looks like the head of my left femur may have fractured. That might have been due to a larger than originally thought tumor in the head of that bone. My left rod is also higher than the right and extends into the head of the bone—the ortho oncologist kept calling it “proud”. I’m going for X-rays tomorrow to find out more and maybe MRIs.

A rather ironic aside, apparently I’ve still got a crazy high pain tolerance. The doctors again today were looking at me with amazement. Amazement that I’m walking around on a potentially fractured bone just like I was walking around on a femur about to shatter last year. I’m getting better at knowing when to see the doctor but I’d be ok with not finding out about weird breaks/symptoms inside my body.

More to come …
