Breast Cancer Facts, 10/4

This is the question literally everyone wants an answer to — why me? There is no good answer since the majority of breast cancer has no genetic component. There are certainly some things that everyone can do to stay healthy, but there are no guarantees. Some patterns can be helpful, but don’t ignore symptoms that concern you. Ask your doctor!

  1. I’m sorry you are in pain. My mets are in my lungs – a time bomb – so I don’t have much in the way of symptoms. I’m aware that I am lucky. Sort of. It doesn’t stop me scanning my body and analysing every symptom, though. And it doesn’t stop my husband turning into a meerkat every time I get a cough.

  2. Thanks for the info. Actress Diahann Carroll died yesterday. She was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1998. Her manager said her cause of death was breast cancer. Similar to Olivia Newton-John, there are survivors for approximately 2 decades before recurrence. Researchers have found that cancer has stem-cells that chemo drugs do not destroy. They are more hopeful for immunology drugs. I asked my oncologist if Herceptin destroyed cancer stem cells and he said “yes” but if that were true, there should be no 10 year recurrence of Her 2 positive breast cancer for those patients who received it.

      1. The researchers make it complicated. Many chemo drugs were developed from the Yew tree. They seem to know that treating cancer requires naturally growing things. However, unless they can put something man-made into it, they can’t patent it, and unless they can patent it, the FDA won’t approve it. If the FDA doesn’t approve it, they can’t sell it. So, we get study results that end along the lines of saying, “More research is needed”.

Here is one study about ground ginger. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26355461
